The Brazilian Institute of the Environment (Ibama) granted ExxonMobil the environmental license authorizing the activity of offshore drilling in six blocks of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin (SEAL-M-351, SEAL-M-428, SEAL-M-430, SEALM-501, SEAL-M-503, SEAL-M-573). Ibama authorized the drilling of up to 11 exploratory wells.

So far, ExxonMobil has guaranteed the drilling of two firm wells, with the others still contingent. The progress of new drilling will depend on the results of the first wells. The activities will be carried out more than 50 km from the coast, where the Sergipe-Alagoas basin is located, and will be temporary, lasting approximately two to three months per well. The drilling will be carried out with Seadrill’s West Saturn drillship.

The oil company may also carry out formation tests, depending on the results of the exploratory campaign. The blocks SEAL-M-351, SEAL-M-428, SEAL-M-430, SEAL-M-501, SEAL-M-503 and SEAL-M-573 on the coast of the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, in water between 1,900 and 3,800 meters. The total area occupied by the blocks is approximately 4,531 km².
