Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname has signed a contract with Seadrill Limited for the supply of drilling platform services in the nearshore area off the coast of Suriname.
Seadrill will mobilize the drilling platform, the West Castor, in the first quarter of 2019 to Suriname for drilling.
Staatsolie starts in April 2019 with the drilling of nine exploration wells. The execution of this project is divided over three main contracts: Drilling Rig, Logistics and Integrated Rig Services.
On November 27, 2018 Staatsolie signed the Logistics contract with Medserv International.
Medserv is in cooperation with local partner Kuldipsingh, responsible for, among other things, the logistics of people and materials and the transport of ships.
The third contract, Rig Services, was awarded to Halliburton for support services such as the positioning of the drilling platform. It is expected that this contract will soon be signed.
In September 2018, Staatsolie signed a declaration of intent with the coastguard of Suriname to guarantee safety during drilling operations.
With the award of the main contracts, a preparation phase of eighteen months is concluded, in which, among other things, social and environmental impact safety studies, as well as a detailed design of the sources is carried out. The contracts have a term of twelve months.
During the negotiations, one of Staatsolie’s starting points was that the economic benefits of this project would benefit Suriname as much as possible due to, among other things, the involvement of Surinamese companies.
The Nearshore Drilling Project means that Staatsolie will drill nine exploration wells in the sea just off the coast in April 2019 until the first quarter of 2020. This area up to forty kilometers from the coastline is called the near shore and has water depths of up to 30 meters.
Staatsolie aims to safeguard long-term production by detecting nearshore oil reserves. This is the first step to achieve this goal. The drilling program is carried out in-house.
Seadrill is an offshore drilling contractor based in Bermuda, active in Angola, Brunei, the Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and Norway.
Medserv International provides logistical support and services, including the design of installations and equipment used for the exploration and production of oil and gas from offshore fields.
The company operates from its permanent base in Malta, but also Cyprus, Egypt, Oman and Iraq and is represented in Libya with an office.
The American Halliburton is one of the world’s largest oil field service companies, with offices in more than seventy countries. The company is no stranger to Suriname and has already supported several onshore drilling operations at Staatsolie. (GFC)
