“There must be some kind of way out of here, said the Joker to the Thiefâ€
December 1967- Bob Dylan but….made famous by Jimi Hendrix
There are two reasons why I am writing on this today, great song by the way!
(1) Social Networking Sites and your Choice of Channels
Human natures pushes us to re-invent things that we have, make them better, shinier and basically work for us. Social Networking is no different, it has adapted to multi generations of people since its inception. Now you can find a social network for almost anything in the world, pets, people, sea life and many you may not want or need!
The one thing that makes the largest difference is your personal interests and what you want to socially be active in! There is a stigmatic view on all channels out there such as “Facebook†named the “Old Peoples Network†and “Snapchat†named “The Young Kids Networkâ€. “LinkedIn†named the “Business Network†and then you throw in a “Instagram, Twitter etc etcâ€. Truth is some of these networks have from 300 million to 1 Billion active users per month. You can imagine how easy it would be to get lost in some of these places and never use it to its full potential, ever. This is why micro-social networking sites are changing the way we think about interaction with our “selected†group or groups of people.
For the use of the first words of the song “All Along the Watchtower for which Bob Dylan wrote and Jimmy Hendrix made famous just later on with his rendition of it, this applies to the many different networks our there specializing in their own genre of networking and you don’t have to use the big names out there, so “yes†there is a way out of here if you don’t feel that the network you are using fits your life needs, most are used as tools when you need them and not as an essential base to keep you connected to your friends or family but more ADHOC or “On Demandâ€.
(2) Don’t Settle with what’s there, go find a Network that fits what you need
Our day to day lives are filled with many different things such as memories, photos, successes, failures, happiness, sadness, fear and every other emotion that you can physically fit on a newsfeed of any major social networking site, its the release of dopamine while using these networks that drive use. For a generation of people that want that “like†or “TBHâ€, its the proverbial “gathering around the campfireâ€. But once people realize that it is not “useful†for their life, they immediately turn to something else, hence the reason for so many different networking sites for you to choose from!
Look through the ones that are out there and use them as tools, if they serve the correct purpose, if they enhance your life or the future of your career jump on them, do some research on what these networks are “strongly†used for and leverage them for what they are intended for as there are millions of non-active users still sitting around these networks.
All of the application creators rally around a term called “retention†this is simply how much a user uses them app in the following days after it is downloaded, you would be surprised that most people download hundreds of apps they only use one time from “app store impulse†but remember, for most applications in these stores they are meant for a group of people and not for everyone. That brings us to the second meaning, yes you can take the idea of social networking and make it useful to your daily life, hence Jimi taking that original version of Bob Dylan’s song and making it to the charts where Bob wasn’t able to get it to crack the top 100 at the time.
