One person was killed and another is missing after a helicopter operating between Galliano and Venice crashed into the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, authorities said.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed Nicholas Duplantis, of Houma, was killed in the accident. The pilot remains missing and his identity is unknown.Â
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.Â
Bristow Group Inc., which owns the a Bell 407 helicopter with registration number N577AL, said the aircraft was carrying one passenger and one crew member. Neither were identified by authorities.
The Coast Guard responded to the crash about 1:42 p.m., and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office was also assisting in the rescue, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Lexie Preston of the New Orleans District.
“Our highest priority is assisting those involved and impacted by the accident,†Bristow Group President and CEO Don Miller said in a news release.
The families of those onboard the aircraft have been contacted, he said, and the company is in the process of collecting information.
Bristow Group’s incident response team has been mobilized and is working with law enforcement, he added.
Houston-based aviation company Bristow Group has a heliport in Galliano.
