The world is full of applications to communicate with, and I wanted to bring everyone up to speed on where they came from, what their intents may have been, how they fared out over the years, what kind of revenue mechanisms were in place and how the future looks for them.
With privacy being a large concern for many users today, it wasn’t something that was high on the list when companies or entrepreneurs introduced 1.0 of each of these but out of competition and a growing concern, they are all running neck and neck to get new users or bring back older users.
We forget that the internet is not free, someone somewhere is paying for it and it is that very thing that powers each one of these companies to change over the years. These changes some good and some not so good are all relevant to one thing, return. Return comes in the definition of cost per user, as in “what does it cost me to get one user”. Similar to any marketing conversion, how much do I have to spend to sell one particular service, product or item, same with social media networks. Many variables go into this such as marketing, development, wages and much more but overall, they want to get this cost as low as possible. To do this they have to circumvent the normal thought process because everyone thinks “the internet is free” and it makes getting a return hard when free is always on the mind of all the application users.
